10 Questions featuring Nikita Prokhorov
Inspired by the Proust Questionnaire, I'm asking letterers and calligraphers I admire to share their thoughts on success, frustration, personal experiences, and more. First time I met Nik was at a TDC event, and then we happened to take the same Spencerian Lettering class with Ken Barber. He's kind, super punny, and seriously talented.
Nik is also a master of ambigrams, and while I usually try to prepare a thumbnail image in the interviewee's style, I'm not able to do him justice and decided to go with the Erotica font, a Spencerian script by Maximiliano Sproviero.
What's your name and where can we find you?
What's your lettering / calligraphy background?
Hand lettering and digital lettering mainly.
When was the last time you surprised yourself?
Falling in love with Spencerian Script and being fairly successful at drawing it.
What is your greatest frustration in the creative process?
Not being able to get where I want quicker!
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
My ambigram book!
Also, how my lettering style has evolved over the years.
Who are your favorite artists?
I have too many to list. Different lettering artists inspire me for different reasons and with different styles. Same can be said for designers, fine artists, etc.
What is your motto?
If you don't fail at first, you're not doing it right!
If you weren't a letterer/calligrapher, what would you be and why?
I would be a furniture designer, a fashion designer, or a car designer
What's your ONE piece of advice to people starting out?
Practice, practice, practice! Start with simple words and get comfortable with lettering in different styles.
Anything you'd like to add:
I want to re-focus my portfolio 100% on lettering, both hand and digital.
